New Funds Will Support Vital Housing Counseling Services

Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Orange County (CCCS-OC) has been included in a new round of funding from NeighborWorks America under the Making Home Affordable (MHA) program. Headquartered in Washington, DC, NeighborWorks America is focused on creating opportunities for lower-income people to live in affordable homes in safe, sustainable neighborhoods that are healthy places for families to grow. The funding will be provided to CCCS-OC through the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.

"We are very pleased to be affiliated with this innovative program and a recipient of this important funding to support our assistance for as many people as possible throughout Orange County in addressing issues associated with homeownership," said CCCS-OC President Cheryl Spencer-Borden. "All of these services have been carefully developed to help people realize their dream of owning and retaining their own home."

CCCS-OC provides a range of vital services designed to help individuals and families learn about important topics related to housing and homeownership. Those topics include preparations for buying a home, information specifically for first-time buyers, reverse mortgage counseling and foreclosure counseling.

The Making Home Affordable (MHA) program was introduced by President Barack Obama's administration in 2009 in an effort to provide qualified homeowners the ability to reduce mortgage payments to affordable levels. MHA has since expanded the number of specialized programs available to homeowners, and many who did not previously meet program guidelines may currently be eligible under expanded program criteria.

On April 16, 2013, NeighborWorks America announced that $9.46 million had been allocated to several agencies and organizations for the Making Home Affordable Outreach and Intake Project. Through the project, funding will be made available to help homeowners apply for foreclosure prevention assistance through several MHA work-out options.

Then, on June 28, 2013, NeighborWorks America announced Supplemental Outreach Fund allocations totaling $500,000. These allocations provide funding for participating agencies targeting populations that are potentially eligible for Making Home Affordable but require culturally and linguistically specialized services, are underrepresented by mortgage modifications, or are disproportionately impacted by predatory lending or unemployment.
