Local financial agency receives federal grant Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Orange County has received more than $50,000 in funding By Caitlin Adams March 29, 2012 Santa Ana-based Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Orange County, a consumer financial education and counseling firm, has been selected by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to receive $51,118 in the form of a federal grant. The funds from the Housing and Urban Development Dept. (HUD) are aimed at providing support to housing assistance and counseling programs throughout the U.S. CCCS-OC received the second-largest grant total in California, attesting to the value of its services in the community. "The HUD-approved counseling agencies this funding supports are crucial in helping struggling families on a one-to-one basis to manage their money, navigate the home buying process, and secure their financial futures," said Shaun Donovan, secretary of HUD. A number of CCCS-OC counseling programs will directly benefit from the federal funds, including the firm's information sessions on reverse mortgages, pre-purchases and home buying, homeless assistance, and aid in securing rental housing. "We are very pleased to be a recipient of this important funding to help us assist as many people as possible. Orange County has a large local target population of well over 3 million people in a geographic area of less than 800 square miles. This high concentration of population, with over 3,800 [residents] per square mile in one of the most densely populated areas in the country, empowers us to provide one-on-one and group counseling to a large target group in an extremely efficient manner," said CCCS-OC President Cheryl Spencer-Borden. Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Orange County (CCCS-OC) has six office locations throughout Orange County, and provides its counseling services free of charge. The company also offers help to consumers through class sessions offered at community venues, such as colleges, churches or community centers, as well as over the phone.
