April Is Financial Literacy Month

We all start out not knowing anything about money. However, each of us has our own story about how we learned what a dollar is really worth, whether it was a stint with a lemonade stand or a neighborhood babysitting job. For me, my first financial endeavor was selling baskets of fruit and flowers on my Grandmother's front lawn. The fruit I sold included apricots, plums, nectarines, and peaches. We dyed our Shasta Daisies so the usual white was pink, blue or yellow. It is a beautiful memory.

Personal financial literacy is the foundation for preparing people to become responsible workers, heads of households, investors, entrepreneurs, business leaders and citizens.

With the goal of increasing public awareness about the importance of financial education and the serious consequences from a lack of understanding of personal finances, Congress officially designated April as Financial Literacy Month.

Being financially literate means knowing how to manage money, use credit effectively, build wealth and make sound financial decisions. It has nothing to do with the amount of individual income. It means knowing what to do with a paycheck once it's been earned.

Financial literacy can mean economic security and overall well-being for consumers who are well educated and well informed. But it's equally important for people at all levels of income and education. They can make better decisions for themselves and their families, contribute more to their communities and encourage economic development.

We are committed to providing financial education and resources to improve our nation's financial literacy.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Y. Borden
