CDS selected by Lockheed Martin as Subcontractor for Navy CANES program

Commercial Data Systems has been named a subcontractor by Lockheed Martin for the Navy CANES program.

In March 2010, Lockheed Martin was one of two companies awarded a contract by the Navy for the Consolidated Afloat Networks and Enterprise Services (CANES) common computing environment. Under terms of the contract Lockheed Martin will design, develop and deliver a CANES engineering development model consisting of hardware and associated operating systems, virtualization and commercial software needed in a functional network.

The CANES program will consolidate many of the Navy's information systems networks, reducing the infrastructure size while increasing reliability and networking capabilities. It calls for an open architecture approach for easy-to-implement upgrades as technology evolves. The primary goals of the CANES program are to build a secure afloat network required for naval and joint operations, and consolidate and reduce the number of afloat networks through the use of mature cross domain technologies and common computing environment infrastructure. Work will be performed in San Diego and is expected to be completed by April 2011. If all options are exercised, work could continue until September 2014.

For the past sixty years, Lockheed Martin has partnered with the Navy, deploying computing and network infrastructures on every Navy ship. The CANES solution would be deployed across the Navy's 300-plus ships and shore-based sites.

Down selection to a single prime contractor responsible for CANES production is anticipated in 2011. In 2009, CDS was also selected as a subcontractor with Lockheed Martin for the Defense Intelligence Agency's Next Generation Desktop Program.
