Researchers Team Up with CCCS-OC for Groundbreaking Study on Sticking to a Budget

The biggest obstacle for most consumers to getting out of debt and staying out is living within their means. In today's economy, that means resisting temptation all day long, every day. Media and environmental messages mislead consumers to spend, spend, spend their way toward happiness, landing them in the misery of debt.

In an effort to help consumers everywhere, and especially our clients on the Debt Management Plan (DMP) who have committed themselves to becoming debt free, CCCS-OC has joined with a prestigious research team including Mary Wolfinbarger Celsi, Professor, California State University Long Beach; Russel P. Nelson, PhD candidate, University of California, Irvine; Stephanie Dellande, Associate Professor, Menlo College; and Mary C. Gilly, Professor, University of California, Irvine and Vice Chair of the UC Academic Senate. They are putting the finishing touches on a groundbreaking study on temptation and sticking to a budget with volunteers from our DMP.

This paper examines the experience of temptation through the lens of consumers who, having lived beyond their means, have sought help and financial counseling at CCCS-OC. In the 12-week study, participants reported the weekly temptations they experienced while on the DMP. The study explores the situations and rationales that participants say lead them into temptation along with self-control strategies employed in the moment by these distressed consumers. The study found roughly three categories of DMP participant responses to temptation based on their self-talk during temptation episodes: deniers, strugglers and victors.

CCCS-OC is excited about the insights provided by the study and using this new understanding to improve the success rates of future Debt Management Plan enrollees. The full study will be linked on our website when complete.
