Graduate Client of the Year 2012 Reduces Debt by $30,000 Mr. and Mrs. Slusser came to us in April 2009 with nearly $26,000 in unsecured debt, all in credit cards. Their financial difficulty stemmed from an over-reliance on credit cards as a safety net and poor money management skills. These challenges caught up with them through medical expenses for Mr. Slusser, a long grocery strike that destroyed Mrs. Slusser's income for over six months, and increased living expenses. Through the CCCS-OC Debt Management Program (DMP), they worked hard to reduce expenses and rework their budget. Having previously filed bankruptcy, they knew they could find a better way. They committed to working overtime when possible, closely tracking their expenses, and making big lifestyle changes. The DMP experience included an orientation, the Better Fortunes exercise, several classes on balancing personal finances and free materials. When they secured funds in October 2011, they could have taken a long-postponed vacation or treated themselves in some other way. Instead, they used the funds to pay off their program early, completing the DMP in 30 months. They were renting when they came to us, and now they are completing the purchase of a home thanks to their greatly improved debt-to-income ratio and our first-time homebuyer program. They have spread the word to their friends as well as their daughter who is looking to buy her first home, and they are paying it forward by donating to CCCS-OC via United Way with each paycheck. CCCS of Orange County mission is dedicated to assisting consumers achieve financial stability through education and counseling.
